First of all, we went and had a cup of coffee. Rosemary knew a supper little café near the harbour, so we could look out of the window at the warter. We walk andlessly. I think that the last time we met was in 1980, when we were both in London. Then we walk aroud for a while, and eventually went to her house. It is in a rather nice part of Bristol called clifton where Rosemary’s family have lived for years.
We had a lovely much. I met her mother, and later, her two chilren when they came home from school in the evening. I hadn’t met either of them before, ofcourse, but we all got on well together. Many schoolchildren learn that the Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. But the real inventor was Antonio Meucci, a poor Italian-American scientist. He shared a workshop with Bell in the 1860s, and made a talking telegraph for his wife who was ill in bed so that she could call him when she wanted something. But Meucci never took his idea to the US Patent Office because he was too poor to pay the $250 that he needed while Bell applied for a patent for his "own" invention of the telephone.
On February 14th 1876, Alexander Graham Bell took the invention to the Patent Office. Just two hours later, another inventor, Elisha Gray arrived with the same idea – too late! Bell was granted ownership of the patent. At the time, nobody believed that the telephone was an important invention. Bell’s father-in-law, also a scientist, described the invention as "a beautiful toy".
In 2001, the United States Congress took the extraordinary decision of doing justice to Meucci, passing a resolution that officially recognized Meucci as the real inventor of the telephone.
